Avery Zhao-Djokic is inspired by her past experiences living & working in different countries

Avery was born in Beijing, China, and at the age of five her family moved to Ottawa, Ontario. She has studied Design at Ryerson University and from 2005 to 2008 she studied at the Grande Ecole ESMOD in Paris, France, where she received a Bachelors in Fashion Design.
After working a few years as a Designer for several international fashion houses, in 2013 Avery began pursuing a BFA at Concordia University in Studio Arts. Avery participates in art festivals where she performs time-based painting (both digital projection and on traditional surfaces), and is currently working on a series of oil paintings around the industrial fashion district of Chabanel, Montreal. In this submitted painting, entitled ‘Chabanel Fashion Designer’, the oil painting depicts a common scene from the hectic day of a Montreal designer. A whirlwind of clothes, papers and trendboards clutter the designer’s mind as she navigates this career that mixes the forces of global trade and creativity.
As a student in fine arts, Avery is inspired by her past experiences living and working in different countries. She is often inspired by macro themes such as the global context, international trade issues, new human-machine relationships and space exploration. Subjects that are (almost overly) vast and tangential are melded together as Avery tries to visualize them in sculptures and painting using repetition, gradation and rhythm. She is also founder of the Art Crush Ensemble, who recently filmed an art & music video highlighting the Montreal Art Centre: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S21QFSrDo4
