Fariba Laliberté is a mixed media artist of Persian/ French-Canadian ancestry. She was born in 1982 in the Democratic Republic of Congo to a family of famous artists and philanthropists. Her late uncle, Alfred Laliberté, was one of Canada's most influential sculptures and painters of the 20th century. Her late aunt, Mildred Mottahedeh, held one of the most prestigious private collections of porcelain in the world.
Fariba's formative years were richly influenced by her parents sense of philanthropy and innovation. In 1989, Fariba's family moved to Laos South East Asia, where she grew up in an art gallery. While her father worked as an inventor and entrepreneur, Fariba's mother managed her own gallery as a collagist and art collector.
After extensive travels in over 30 countries, Fariba Laliberté settled in Montreal Quebec. From 2011-2015, she pursued her BFA at Concordia University with a minor in Painting. Fariba is currently developing her métier in portraiture. Her distinguished style as an emerging artist is promising a name to be remembered.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
My art is an expression of ephemerality, power and vulnerability. As seen through the eyes of the female body, it aims to express the dichotomy of femininity. As if juggling on a high wire between two worlds, my characters often portray an ambiguous persona, a child-like sensitivity trapped between reality and imagination.
Through the use of mix media, primarily acrylic and collage, I seek to capture a colorful yet emotional landscape, unbound by logic and space. Inspired by the 19th century symbolist movement, more specifically admired within the works of Gustav Klimt, my paintings aims to embark the viewer on an introspective journey, a lucid dream captured within the gaze of its characters.
