An academic “jack of all trades” / nomad, Jennifer Fleming has taught French, Spanish, English, Literature, Math, Design, and Textile Arts at Proctor Academy in Andover, NH for 15 years

She and her husband, David, are the founders of and have directed the school’s European Art Classroom program for 5 years now. Prior to that, they directed the school’s French abroad program for 4 years. Both programs are based in Aix-en-Provence, France, where Jennifer and David maintain a professional art studio, and create work inspired by their European travels.
Jennifer’s mixed media pieces not only reflect the European culture to which she is deeply linked, but she also uses fragmentation in her designs to express her mixed feelings about being an ex-patriot. Never fully whole (juggling between homes in New Hampshire, France, and Las Vegas), but all parts having equal importance to her life, Jennifer aims to bind all of her life’s loose ends together with symbolic stitching. Her “My Fractured Life” collection, created in 2016, is the result of her artistic quest in this vein.
As for process, Jennifer begins on flat, treated canvas, and composes layers of nostalgia using acrylic paint, tile stencils, collaged text and images collected on site, fabrics, and photo transfers of her sketches of local flora. Choosing a word or phrase to highlight, she enlarges it so as to dominate one’s focus. Finally, Jennifer further guides our eyes by hand embroidering fissures across her piece. The end product is a compilation of her mastery of mediums meeting her emotional fragility born from eternally feeling temporary.
