Nicoletta Pasquino's process came through the idea of collage and using her treasured books

Picture
This body of work is a series of paintings that revisit stories and characters from the books I most treasured reading when I was growing up. Books like Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Madame Bovery, Memoirs of a Geisha, Picture of Dorian Gray and other classical stories like these. The characters are often dark, complex and overcome difficulties and challenges. As I reread these stories I start thinking about the heroines and how they were my role models. I ask myself, “How have my life experiences and the woman they’ve inspired me to be changed in how I see these characters that I used to look up to?”

I use these thoughts in the series to work out ideas of fragmentation, of the rereading and re-evaluating of an idea, an understanding or a belief. I really enjoy the juxtaposition of the beautiful sketch against the tattered and fragmented paper. Beauty and decay living at the same time on the canvas.

I love handling old books and tattered paper, I love the idea of many hands holding and reading these books, I love the idea of bringing together the past with the present and reinterpreting my ideas as I change and evolve in my life.

My process came through the idea of collage and using my treasured books. Once the sheets from the book are randomly collaged onto the canvas using matt medium, I then draw the image on. The image is of the heroine or hero of the story. As I begin to develop the image I really focus on heroine of the story as I am drawing and painting. I use pastels, charcoal and acrylic paint to complete the painting.
