I believe that I am a figurative painter because the human figure is central to my work. I am also a visual comedian who performs in theatres around the world. I started painting because I realized I needed to do something during the day while performing at night. I could have either slept all day, become a professional tourist or ...paint. I decided I would try the latter, and it has become a wonderful friend that accompanies me everywhere I go. With a few tubes of acrylic paint, some brushes and a canvas I pass away the hours with my “friend”, creating stories about my life, while performing in foreign lands. Painting is another channel for my creativity. It gives me great pleasure, a sense of purpose and sometimes a lot of frustration, but …c’est la vie.

I am a person who paints in “series”. I like to produce bodies of work that relate to each other. One painting inspires another, which inspires another and that’s how they keep developing.

I am currently working on a series called “The Red Curtains”. I have been working on it for 11 years. The paintings of this series are all theatrical, unusual, and inspired by my performing in Mirror or Spiegel tents. In every painting there’s a red curtain, the symbol of the theatre. People are peering out from behind them, a hand is opening one, and bodies are floating past them. The red curtain and other symbols that have evolved over the years are the glue that holds this series together. The paintings have developed and have also grown! They are now about 6 feet high by 4 feet wide. Not the best size to sell but it’s the size that I like to do.

I start each painting with just an idea and a blank canvas. Using two paintbrushes, one with Titanium white and the other with Prussian blue, I begin to sketch in my main character. I then continue adding the other people, imagining where they are and what they are doing. Once that is worked out, I add the set to complete the story. The people and other objects are often repositioned or removed but through this process of creation, the form of the painting is gradually revealed. I then continue refining the lines while adding the colour. I use Cadmium red, Cadmium yellow, Cobalt turquoise, Prussian blue, Payne’s grey and Titanium white. These have become my colours giving my work it’s palate.

In 2015 I was represented by Agora Gallery, New York.

I have taken part in several group exhibitions such as:
“Pulse of Abstraction”Agora gallery, New York 2015.
“Circus Art event” Seattle 2015.
“Palazzo Colombino Foyer” Basel 2014.
“Les Fenetre qui parle” Montreal 2012.
